Sri Lanka - Pidurangala or Sigiriya (LION) ROCK?

We did not drive straight to Sigiriya. We stopped at the Dambulla cave temples on the way, spent the afternoon scrambling up Pidurangala and returned to Lion Rock early the next morning. That order gave us three very different experiences instead of one rushed sightseeing day.

Our Video

Airport Transportation

We arrived in Colombo from New Delhi and had arranged a private driver through our accommodation Thal Sewana Homestay in Sigiriya. Instead of going straight there, we included Dambulla Cave Temple as a stop. Our driver shared a little about the area along the way and picked us up again near the stupa at Golden Temple before we continued to Sigiriya.

In this article, we share what we actually booked, what we paid and what we would recommend after travelling the route ourselves. Our driver was arranged directly with our stay, not through a tour platform. Prices marked as what we paid are from April 2025. Current prices and entry rules can change.

Dambulla Cave Temple

The climb up is short but warm. Inside, the light drops, the sound softens and the scale of the place only becomes clear as you move from one cave to the next. UNESCO records five sanctuaries, 157 statues and around 2100 square metres of murals.

  • Allow around an hour for the caves, plus time for the steps and the Golden Temple area below.
  • Cover shoulders and knees. Remove shoes before entering the sacred areas. Free storage available at the entrance.
  • Be considerate when photographing Buddha images and do not pose with your back to a statue.
  • Carry water and keep snacks packed away from the monkeys on the way up and in the temple.
  • What we paid: about US$10 per person. Sri Lanka Tourism currently lists US$10 too, but verify before travelling.

Pidurangala: The View of Lion Rock

At first it feels like a stepped temple path. Near the top it turns into a proper boulder scramble. That last section is the fun part for us, but it calls for shoes with grip and some comfort using your hands.

  • Take water, wear grippy shoes and leave time to descend in daylight.
  • For us, the reward was the wide view of Sigiriya without the same level of crowding we saw on Lion Rock.
  • The provincial tourism authority rates the hike as medium difficulty. The final rocks may be unsuitable for anyone who cannot scramble safely.
  • Dress respectfully at the temple section and follow instructions at the site.
  • What we paid: roughly US$3 / EUR 2.50 at the time. Treat that as a trip note, not a current quoted ticket price.

Our base between the Two Climbs

We stayed at Thal Sewana Homestay. The location made both climbs easy to reach, the welcome was warm and our room and large bathroom were clean. It is a nature-close stay: the occasional frog or insect in the bathroom is part of the experience, not a surprise to hide.

Our host also arranged the early tuk-tuk to Sigiriya. We paid about US$3 for that ride in April 2025. Ask the current rate and departure time before booking.

  • What we paid: This one was really cheap! Only US$40 / EUR 40 for two nights! We loved it!

Sigiriya - The Climb through the Story

Pidurangala is about the view of Sigiriya. Sigiriya itself is about the ancient city beneath your feet, gardens, terraces, the Lion Paw platform, the summit foundations and the descent along the mirror wall.

Book the official ticket

This is a direct CCF link, not an affiliate link: Click here

Before you go

  • Current CCF foreign-adult full ticket: US$35 on 29 September 2026. Recheck on the day you book.
  • CCF says online orders must still be exchanged for an actual ticket at the site’s counter. Keep the order number accessible.
  • We set off early for softer light and less heat. Current counter and access times may differ from what you see in our video, so verify them before planning a summit sunrise.

On the rock

  • Take your time at the Lion Paws. They make the scale of the former entrance easier to imagine.
  • The summit holds foundations, terraces and water basins, not a standing palace.
  • Watch the wasp warnings and follow on-site staff instructions. Keep food out of sight around monkeys.
  • Leave time for the gardens on the way out. They are a calmer end to the climb.

Sigiriya or Pidurangala?

If you have the time and the mobility, our answer is both. They are not duplicates.

Choose Pidurangala for…
A more hands-on climb, the classic view of Lion Rock and time to sit at the top without the crowds.

Choose Sigiriya for…
The archaeological site itself. Gardens, ancient engineering, ruins and the Lion Paw entrance.

Only time for one? Choose the story you care about more, not just the lower price. Pidurangala is the better viewpoint, but Sigiriya is the richer heritage visit.

Good to know before you go

Is Pidurangala difficult?
The provincial tourism site calls it medium difficulty. The last stretch is a boulder scramble, so it feels harder than a normal viewpoint walk.

Can I see sunrise from Sigiriya?
We filmed beautiful early light there, but access and ticket-counter hours can change. Check current CCF information and ask your accommodation before promising yourself a summit sunrise.

Do I need to book Sigiriya online?
You can use the official CCF e-ticket service. Its current terms say you collect the actual ticket at the counter using your order receipt number.

Are the monkeys and wasps dangerous?
We had no incident, but keep food secured, do not feed or approach wildlife and follow every wasp warning and staff instruction on the rock.

Our loris night walk was cancelled

Later in our Sigiriya stay, after our Hurulu Eco Park safari, we had planned a guided night walk to look for lorises. By evening the weather had turned to thunder and rain, which meant the walk could not go ahead. We were disappointed, but that is part of travelling. We never went into the forest, so we cannot review the guide or tell you what the sightings would have been like.

We would still like to try a night walk one day. If you are considering one, check the weather and cancellation terms, choose a responsible guide and keep the evening flexible. The link below is what we booked. At least the PowerPoint presentation at the beginning and the staff was nice and we got our money back.
